    Investing in Fiber Laser Cutting: A Step Change in Precision

    In the summer of 2020, VFM commissioned its first high-power fiber laser cutting system. The decision was not made lightly. CO2 systems were still common across the industry, and the upfront investment in fiber technology was significant. But the production team had been tracking edge quality, kerf consistency, and cycle times on customer sample runs for months, and the case for fiber was clear.

    The new system gave the workshop the ability to cut carbon steel up to 20mm, stainless up to 12mm, and aluminum sheet with edge quality that needed minimal secondary finishing. Cycle times on thin-gauge work dropped by more than half, which meant tighter lead times for customers without compromising tolerance.

    More importantly, the precision of the new cutting head opened up design freedoms that were previously off the table — fine internal features, tight nested layouts, and intricate ventilation patterns on enclosure faces.

    The 2020 investment set a pattern that has continued every year since: when the capability gap matters to customers, VFM commits the capital. Equipment is only ever a means to an end, but the right equipment, run by a disciplined team, is what makes a precision shop precision.
