Design for Manufacture: Getting Custom Enclosures Right the First Time
Custom enclosures are one of the most common projects through the VFM shop. They are also where small design choices have the biggest impact on cost, lead time, and field performance. The engineering team runs every new enclosure program through a structured design-for-manufacture review before the first sheet is cut.
The review starts with material selection. Many customers default to 1.5mm cold-rolled steel because that is what their last enclosure used, but the right gauge depends on stiffness requirements, finish, and how the box will be handled in service. Switching to 1.2mm with a properly placed stiffening rib often saves weight and cost without losing structural integrity.
Bend radii and flange lengths are the next check. Designs that look clean in CAD sometimes call for inside radii smaller than the press brake can produce in that material, or flanges shorter than the brake can grip cleanly. Catching these issues before cutting saves hours of rework.
Finally, the team looks at fastener choices, ventilation patterns, and access panels. Self-clinching nuts are wonderful when they suit the application, but they constrain finishing options. Hinges and latches should be specified with the coating thickness in mind so that final assembly does not require touch-up.
A good DFM review takes a couple of hours of engineering time. It routinely saves days on the production schedule and produces an enclosure that fits, finishes, and assembles the way the designer intended.
